This is for senior's research for project on an abstract artist... but may be interesting anyway!
Artist is listed first then examples. Some are contemporary and still alive and painting others are pioneers and give historical reference:

It is really important to start to see tones or lights and darks in what you are painting and drawing...

sometimes it helps to squint at your subject and sometimes there are no strong blacks or whites- if you hold up a black or white paper next to your subject it will help you judge relative tone- use a viewfinder of each colour. Below, which grey is darker?
