It is really important to start to see tones or lights and darks in what you are painting and drawing...
sometimes it helps to squint at your subject and sometimes there are no strong blacks or whites- if you hold up a black or white paper next to your subject it will help you judge relative tone- use a viewfinder of each colour. Below, which grey is darker?
